FISHING.......PORT BTOUGHTON

MARCH 28TH,29TH,30TH,31ST.....

BUCK was out on the open seas in Reg's bigger boat and came back with a host of squid and crab! Salt and Pepper squid on the menu Friday night! Out again Saturday and more of the above but I needed some iron so steak on the menu Saturday night. So many crabs ,so crab cakes for Sunday!!! If I come back with a hard shell and tentacles, you' ll know why!!!!!

MONDAY , OUR DAY FISHING!

Out at 7.30am,couldn't ask for a calmer day on the water!Depending on depth you can see the bottom!

Squid jigs on the rods,(prawn like lures with a mass of tiny hooks at the end,you cast your rod out,let it slightly sink and reel in slowly jerking along the way so the squid thinks its alive) and within minutes I have caught a big one! You bring them near to the boat and swish them back and forward so they shoot out the black ink ,then Buck chokes them!!!! Heads are pulled off for crab bait and they go in a net behind the boat, once the boat is motoring along,it cleans them really well then I only have a little bit of cleaning to do back on shore! Crumbed squid schnitzel for dinner and I made a creamy crab sauce for on top!!! Buck ended up with 4 ,myself 2 but they were the biggest!!!!

Set the rod up for whiting and we both managed only to snare a crab each,Bucks was a blue swimmer but mine was a sandy so I shook him off the line! We placed ourselves over a sandbar with reed alongside but we had no luck with whiting!

Captain Buck, cup of tea in hand as well as the rod.Multi tasking!!!!???

On our way back in we anchored amongst the reedy bottom, threw over 4 pots and had 20 crab within 45 mins, that's enough as we have to clean and steam them and find room in the fridge! Buck is always generous and if you are our neighbours you will get a feed of crab!

PORT BROUGHTON

TUESDAY 25TH,WEDNESDAY 26TH,THURSDAY27TH

The McBurnies left on Wednesday morning and headed home for a month and well see them somewhere on the east coast by July! Steve,John and Jenny went out crabbing on Tuesday while I prepared the lamb roast to send off Trudy and Gordon.Buck got a few crabs ,while The Blacks came back with 20,you can be only meters apart on the water and the catch can be so different!

These are cleaned, steamed and iced ready to munch on later!!!

Off with the Blacks for a coffee via the jetty, checking out if anybody is catching anything! People go down with their rods and pots hoping for a catch, some days crabs can be caught and the same with whiting.

View from jetty looking back towards great old pub!

Yes,we do dinner parties!!! Bookings required..... Not!

Port Broughton Hotel, magic old sandstone and brick building!Last night with The Blacks so dinner at the pub!

As we came out of the pub to walk back to van park, this scene greeted us,looking out towards the jetty, skies here are amazing,no two nights the same!

Buck has been asked by an older guy in the park to go out with him on his larger boat and give him a hand tomorrow so will let you know what's on the menu tomorrow ! Cheers!

PORT BROUGHTON......

FRIDAY21ST MARCH,SATURDAY22ND MARCH

Not a good day for boating and the weather is not looking good for the weekend so we will crab again Monday! Booked the crew in at Palate2 a Palette restaurant for dinner Saturaday night to celebrate our 35 th Wedding anniversary ,falls on Monday 24th and Jenny and John Black celebrate their 40 th on 7 th April !

Great night out !

SUNDAY23 RD MARCH,MONDAY24TH MARCH....

Another rest day ,a bit windy..

On Monday off in the boat,so peaceful approximately 10 kms out, very calm!

That's our mates in the distance!

CRAB CATCHING... The nets get thrown off overboard with a few fish heads in the bait basket, the water is clear and you can watch the crabs crawl into the nets,as soon as they make their way towards the bait in the middle ,they are pulled up and into the boat, measured and killed and popped into the esky box on the boat ,meanwhile I'm fishing with a squid jig for squid but no luck today ,just a couple of dozen crabs,no complaints off course!!

Measuring tool comes out,you have to be spot on otherwise the fisheries are not happy campers!

Crab net to esky!!

Knife through their brain and they are dead!!

That's Bucks job,I'll she'll them and clean them back at cleaning station then we steam them in a basket to cook them, unless we are saving some for another recipe that I google, the boys enjoy a cold beer and eating them around a table at the camp for lunch,a couple of dipping sauces and a lot of mess with shells!!

Buck wasn't so lucky today,a big fella got hold off his finger and took a hunk out of it,he'll survive, the crab wasn't so lucky !!!

PORT BROUGHTON

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY 16th ,17th MARCH

Weather not so good, bit of wind and rain so ventured out for a walk and enjoyed total relaxation with our mates!

Our site... Crusher dust as SA is pretty dry ,not many caravan parks in the Eyre Peninsula have grass sites!

View from our annexe onto the water, tides out but when it's in you can see a few fisherman standing out a fair way ,some catching whiting,as it doesn't get deep as this is a bay tucked in before you enter the Spencer Gulf.

MONDAY,TUESDAY ,WEDNESDAY,THURSDAY 17TH-20TH

The fishing starts,Buck goes out on his own and is successful, enough crabs to eat fresh and I pickle 10 jars in a vinegar brine for future use! He was also lucky and we have ended up with 4 squid as well! Jenny and John Black arrived on Tuesday night so we decided pizzas were the go so Gordon and I made the dough,no short cuts in this camp. Buck also thought Singapore crab would be good so we saved some crabs from the steamer and I googled the recipe and voila !!!!!

Not bad if I do say so myself!!! We definitely eat well,Thursday had me doing "her indoor jobs", washing the sheets and cleaning the van, shame it follows you wherever you go!! Buck has a rest from the boat as I'm going with him next time !

Clare to Port Broughton .........

Arrived in the Clare valley and stayed hitched on Thursday night so we could take of easier in the morning.

The office at the caravan park had local wine for sale so I purchased a bottle of Rose to have with our chicken for dinner. Yeehi!

FRIDAY 14TH APRIL

Arrived at Port Broughton around 10 am after driving over on the Goyder Highway named after George Goyder,an Englishman who came out to Australua and lived here.He surveyed SA,took him nearly 2 yrs and he travelled 80,000 miles on horseback!!!!

He basically let farmers know where to farm crops so anywhere north of the Goyder Line was not good and he proved his findings right as the farmers who headed north above his line only lasted a short time and abandoned their farm and homes, you see a lot of ruins! Uncanny knowledge because if you see SA from the air there is a distinct line where good vegetation exists for crops!

Sunset on Friday night!!!

Our view from the back of the van is straight out towards the bay before it goes out into tge major part of the Spencer Gulf! Weather for the weekend is forecast windy and cool so no fishing till Monday morn!
