TUESDAY 27THMAY..Arrived in Katherine late morning after a pit stop at Pine Creek and some roadworks slowing us down....
Great coloured bark in the park!
Great cup of coffee and snack at Pine Creek,dicovered gold here in 1800,s and then became a major part of the railway line to Darwin during the war years! Now a pretty little town with a great cafe!
Bit of smoke haze around as they continue to burn off the grass as the indigenous people have for years ! Little dog was having a lovely ride!
WEDNESDAY 28TH MAY...... Spent some money in Katherine today,grog ,food and some electrical equipment,upgrade to our vast satellite box and a new HD recorder for the TV,all in all a few hundred bucks into the Katherine economy! Had a pedicure as well,bliss!! Lunch at the local chinese ,very nice and the park is putting on a sausage sizzle tonight and a big screen to watch the State of Origin match! Off to Mataranka tomorrow! Last night bit of commotion in the park,one of our natives spotted a lady putting grog in her car and the female native tried to pinch it,lot of language and the police were called! Long night!!
THURSDAY 29TH MAY.........Arrived in Mataranka ( 420 kms south of Darwin )and set up camp for a couple of days at the Territiory Manor Motel and CaravanPark,pretty dry and could do with some TLC,nothing that a broom,blower and geurny couldn't fix. I'm amazed as they spend so much money on a place and do no upkeep,it's a shame! Peacocks and guinea fowl plus a couple of brolgas roam the grounds and if they watered it would be so much nicer!
As I type the sprinklers have been turned on !!
FRIDAY 30TH MAY....Mataranka...off to the thermal springs a warm 32 degrees at the Berry Springs up the road and a strong current,pop in at one end and float to the next,the water doesn't look like it's moving but it is strong!
Popped over to the local gallery and museum! "We of the Never Never "was filmed in this region and there were some great stories about the town before,during and after the war!
Not sure what this tree is but it's massive,huge canopy with a huge root system up out of the ground ! Off towards Daley Waters tomorrow,heading East!
SATURDAY 31ST MAY..... GOING SOUTH THEN TURNING LEFT.....towards Queensland, along the way there are many termite mounds and travellers have started to dress them!
SUNDAY 1ST JUNE...spent last night under the stars with at least another 20 vans at a roadside stop 70 kms north of Tennant Creek,travelled 500 kms yesterday and enough was enough! Chatted to a few people ,early night...
Woke up ,looking out the window... Off to Tennant Creek for fuel then to Three Ways turning towards QLD !
Another 500 kms today ,15 kms from the QLD border ,bit cooler 25 degrees! We have trees....... Then no trees,stations,fencing and cattle yards' pulled up for the night another free camp,toilets,water,gazebos and fire pits for BBQ etc!
Tucked ourselves in,a breeze helps keep the flies away! We are at Avon Downs,big police complex across the road that services the area! Aboriginal community tucked over behind us,the small community of Avon Downs, ....we will rely on our solar and gas for the night,water in the tanks for a shower,a must,not going to bed with dirty feet!
MONDAY2ND JUNE.........
Cloncurry today in Qld,travelled over the border through Camooweal,Mt Isa! Discovery park,gave us Grey Nomad discount and the washing machines,powder and dryers are free! Laundry Heaven !
